Am I the only one who has trouble timing grenades?
It seems like the set time is random. I end up trying to
set one off 2-3 times before I hold the button long enough,
and then hold it too long and blow myself up. It seems I
should have a "feel" for the timing by now, but I don't,
which makes me wonder whether there is some randomness
in the time to set one. Probably not, but I am sure having issues.
Currently on Farmland 60.
I am going to get really irritated when I discover that unless I get all
the grenades possible I cannot finish the level, since I keep missing a few.

There certainly shouldn't be any random timing involved in it. Earlier I had a lot of trouble with this too but I think I have just grown more accustomed with the timing of using the grenade (or the feel as you say it). At least for me, the feel has gotten better as I've played more.
Speaking of randomness in bd4, the most irritating aspect of bd4 for me is the randomness involved in a "rockpush". There propably is an implementation reason behind this since I can't think of any logical reason why such a feature would be implemented. It makes no sense to me that pushing a rock can sometimes happen in one click and another time in, say 20 clicks. Wil, could you shed some light into this so I don't have to be so irritated about it |

Yep. The timing behind the grenade is based only on the flow of "ticks" in the game and the release on the arrow keys. There is no randomness. Once you are pressing the "fire"/"enter" key and NOT pressing any other keys the timer starts. After 4 (just checking code, nope, 5) ticks the grenade will be launched. You have two ticks (the next and one after) in which to release the button and run. Consequently it is possible with timing and experience to set a grenade and the go (for example) left, up, up rather than straight left or straight up. This using a grenade around a corner still scares me but it sometimes required to get out of trouble or because the person making the level was a bastard.
The rock push. Yeah, issues here. To maintain consistency with Emerald Mines (and all bd4 games, high scores, etc) the push is random with a 49.34 percent chance of moving the rock. In the original game it was probably worse since the "random number generator" was based on a pointer through a rom chip that was sparse and dense in places (lower two bits). Mine's based on a variation of drand. Enough techno babble. So, in summary you can wait "forever" for a rock to move.
Secondly, after a rock has been pushed the player "rests" for a tick before they are able to push again. So, the maximum speed of a rock moving if "MOVE, PAUSE, MOVE, PAUSE, MOVE...". If you are "REALLY" unlucky you'll get "PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, PAUSE, EATEN_BY_ALIEN_AND_DIE . |

So basically you are saying that sometimes when you are using a grenade, you're a scared bastard ?

This sucks even more when the rockpush is all you have between your fast exit or a slow exit. Homelands has one map that requires pushing the rock for a mile or so. VERY VERY annoying. IMHO, a bad feature decision in an early version of a software that has lived on just because of backward compatibility and thus can't be removed anymore
